This mark is important for products sold to retailers, especially in the USA. It shows end users they are buying a quality product, which their computer should well support. If you want to use the USB logo, it requires a Trademark License agreement and a Vendor ID (VID) from the USB Implementer Forum (USB-IF) and successful electrical and interoperability tests by an independent USB Test Lab or during one of the quarterly USB plug fest. This will incur a few thousand dollars of administrative fees and it can actually be a good idea to become a member of the USB-IF and have this fee waived among other benefits. For Industrial equipment, or even for retail products from high profile brands, the USB logo may not be required. In this case, insuring the product works is the most important thing. When you do not need USB logo and you do not want to acquire your own VID, Atmel allow you to retain Atmel VID in your application, provided you keep it with Atmel reference software and USB microcontroller. In all instances, whether the logo is required or not, you should fill-in the compliance checklists from the USB-IF, pass the electrical tests and the interoperability tests.
