MIPS vs. ARM http://www.mips.com/blog/?p=36
  • The M14K core has 20% more performance, and implements a 5-stage pipeline architecture against 3-stage for Cortex-M3. CoreMark (which is becoming a more relevant benchmark of processor capabilities) performance is over 35% higher for the M14K.
  • A similarly configured M14K core also has lower power consumption across the range of process nodes. This, combined with the performance advantage, results in the M14K having a higher power efficiency.
  • M14K core maintains support of legacy MIPS32 to offer more flexibility and choice. The M14K core offers the software developer an instruction set of ~300 instructions, twice that available with the Cortex-M3.
  • The M14K core has several advantages compared to the Cortex-M3 in this regard, namely: reduced interrupt latency with over 20% fewer cycles, faster SRAM interface and an optional flash memory prefetch unit, reducing code access times.
  • The M14K reduces development time and time-to-market by offering more enhanced debug features providing superior trace and profiling capabilities.
  • The standard MIPS architecture provides several advanced features and benefits over the ARM architecture, including twice the number of General Purpose Registers, mostly single operation instructions, and simpler less predicated execution.
