UL1577 tests only the isolation barrier of the device. The standard covers products in applications where the supply voltage does not exceed 600 V (DC or rms). UL uses the Dielectric Voltage Withstand Test whereby sample lots are subjected to various types of preconditioning, followed by application of a test voltage for 60 s. The voltage amplitude is equal to the rated dielectric insulation of the device, and is sinusoidal with a frequency of 48-60 Hz. No breakdown of the dielectric material may occur during the tests. In addition, a thermal aging test of the encapsulant and/or internal PCB may be required if their temperature ratings are exceeded.
