Texas Instruments now offers three families of MCUs and DSP chips to the car makers. Especially noteworthy is the new 16-bit TMS430 MCU line that's being targeted at chassis sensing and body networking. Based on the TI's proprietary MSP430 core, the TMS430 contains up to 128 Kbytes of flash, a CAN module, A/D converter, timers among other dedicated circuitry. The first units are being sampled now; production volumes will be available in 2006.
