Atmel will present its latest 32-bit embedded CPU architecture, with an integrated DSP and SIMD instruction set for computationally intensive, power-constrained embedded systems at Embedded World 2006. The company will use the core in new families of 32-bit standard product AVR controllers targeted at wireless, battery-powered applications that include consumer infotainment, point of sales terminals, biometric scanners, voice recognition and motion detection. The AVR32 core allows to execute the same functionality with a much slower clock and substantially reducing power consumption. Atmel AVR32’s high computational throughput includes a number of cycle-saving features that reduce the number of load/store cycles, maximize the utilization of computational resources, provide zero-penalty branches, and reduce the number of cache “misses”.
In addition, Atmel will introduce four new AVR Flash MCUs with USB controller designed to address the requirements of embedded applications. They especially target computer peripherals, consumer products and industrial equipments. Data storage, data transfer, product configuration and update are some of the key applications. AVR microcontrollers can operate at 3 V, with 8 MIPS throughput or at 5 V, with 16 MIPS. In both cases the USB controller can operate in full speed mode at 12 Mbit/s.
Also, as an expansion of its microcontroller offering, Atmel will introduce its new picoPower AVR technology providing battery-based applications with high capability. One of the most significant achievements of picoPower AVR is demonstrated in power-save mode achieving a consumption of 650 nA only at 2.2 V with a 32 kHz real-time counter running, allowing a time control that is required in many applications.
Finally, Atmel’s AT91SAM family of microcontrollers based on the ARM 32-bit RISC processor continues to evolve in response to growing customer demand. The AT91SAM7S, AT91SAM7X and AT91SAM7XC series, based on the ARM7TDMI core, are being extended to 512 KB flash memory options. This gives them increased software flexibility for real-time control, networking and secured networking applications. The AT91SAM7S64 has recently been granted certification by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) for its USB 2.0 full-speed device. The latest addition to the ARM926EJ-S-based family, the AT91SAM9261, now has Windows CE support from leading embedded/real-time systems developer Adeneo. This simplifies the development of complex real-time control applications.
