My own interest in coil guns is educational: I teach an introductory college course in Circuit Analysis,
full of equations and abstract concepts, but a practical design project helps to bring the hard stuff down
to earth. A coil gun is a perfect project for an introductory course since it doesn't have to have too many
components and it practically demonstrates the behavior of the basic components: resistors, capacitors,
and inductors. Plus, it's a lot easier to get students excited about a coil gun than a circuit that blinks an
LED.
