Current flows through diode D1 or D2 whenever the input
voltage exceeds VCC or drops below GND enough to forward
bias either D1 or D2. The device inputs are guaranteed to
withstand from GND – 1.5 V to VCC + 1.5 V and a maximum
current of 20 mA. If this maximum rating is exceeded, the device
could go into a latch–up condition. (See CMOS Latch
Up, this chapter.) Voltage should never be applied to any input
or output pin before power has been applied to the device’s
power pins. Bias on input or output pins should be
removed before removing the power.
However, if the input
current is limited to less than 20 mA, and this current only
lasts for a brief period of time (< 100 ms), no damage to the
device occurs.
